How do you move across country?

Are there any tips on how to move from Virginia to Portland, OR that saves you money? I’ve found that Uhaul and Budget rentals are more expensive (with gas) then some of the moving companies…has anyone had success with moving/shipping companies? Is there anything you can do to make the cost of a moving company less (ie. better days, times of month, etc)?

I moved from southern Ontario to Edmonton Alberta roughly 3000 miles. (i moved there and back)
After many nights of calculations it was cheaper to get movers. They do all the heavy lifting and all the work for the same price or less (in my calculations)
Moving companies usually have flat fees for amount of weight/ truck space instead of day or times of month. They give you a time limit to when your furniture will arrive and are very good at getting it there for those dates. I have never run into a problem with them not hitting their target dates.
Call a few moving companies and they will give you quotes
