Moving a horse?
Hannah asked:
In August, I am moving to Colorado from Louisiana to go to school for equine studies at Colorado State and I would like to bring my horse with me, not only because I want him with me, but I would also like to participate in some of the equine teams at the school that require having your own horse. I was thinking about using a horse transporation company. Any ideas/tips/suggestions on companies?

When moving your horse, you can do a google search on Equine Transportation and call, get SEVERAL quotes. When you move him, take several bales of the hay you feed and once you get to CO, make the change in hay gradual. Also bring red flakey wheat bran and bran him once you get him to his new surroundings.
Don’t forget to get at least 4 quotes from the companies and remember, cheapest is NOT always best when it comes to hauling interstate. You will ALSO have to have a Coggin’s Test so that there are no problems when your horse is crossing state lines.
Best of luck in your new adventure.

Here are three which I know are very good. 1. American Horse Transport – have well maintained vehicles, are on time, very friendly, call a couple of times during transport just to let you kkow how things are going. 2. uship.com, also very good and 3. horseinaroundinc.com also known to be one of hte best. Don’t forget to buy insurance too . I would really do some research on taking your horse to college. There are many drawbacks you may not be considering. If you go to Live Journal.com and to teh equestrian community there is a whole section under their tabs on taking a horse to college I think you will find very informational.

I’ve moved horses from western New Mexico to southeast Texas and back again and because I fret over my horses being transported, I did my homework. One of the best horse transport companies I used was Cox Transport out of Gainsville, TX. It’s run by 2 brothers, Mike and Donny Cox and don’t let the twangy accent fool you. They are great with transporting horses, from a 20 year old mare to a snorty, young stallion….anything. You can get a quote and schedule from them at 1-800-829-8797. Good luck.

I have a friend who lives in colorado and ships her horse to New York for the school year every year, and to Florida for school breaks. She loves him very much (not to mention he’s probably worth something well into the six-figures, gorgeous jumper). She highly recommends Nationwide, so I will pass that recommendation on to you!
BTW Definitely bring your horse to college. I wouldn’t survive it without mine! I have no idea what drawbacks there could be because I certainly haven’t encountered any. In fact I’ve saved a ton of money by bringing her and I can continue to care for her myself, which is very important to me.
