Paying back money owed to a company?
John asked:
I relocated to another state with my current employer under the terms that i would be there for 12 months. unfortunately, i will not be able to see the last 2 months through due to personal / family reasons. i was curious how companies have employees repay the package back. also how would one go about trying to negotiate a pro-rated amount or repayment plan?

Personally, I don’t have the money to repay it back immediately in one giant sum. also i never signed a repayment agreement but i did sign an offer letter that stated how much i will be making annually and that the company would be offering me a relocation package to assist with my move. The company policy just states that i will need to pay it back if I leave volunatrily before my year is up, but has no other details.
any tips would be helpful.
thank you so much

I am assuming that you were a good employee, and you had good relationship with your supervisor. If that is the case, you can meet with the HR manager (or your own supervisor), and explain the reasons why you have to quit before the 12 months are over. If the reasons are indeed valid, most decent companies would be sympathetic, and waive the repayment altogether. Or, at least they would be willing to come to a reasonable agreement. It is preferable to meet in person, rather than negotiating over phone or e-mail.
